 2026 LATE SUMMER(Election) EDITION

One Vote, One Rock: It’s Time to Swing

Hi Fam,

The Moment Is Here

Election season is upon us, and it is time to make things right. The ads are loud, the misinformation is spreading, and the distractions are designed to keep us divided and discouraged.

Do Not Feed the Narrative

I am tired of hearing our people speak negatively about voting. When we say voting does not matter, we feed the very narrative designed to suppress our voices.

We need to talk to our kids, especially the young adults, preparing to vote for the first or second time—and make sure they understand:

·         where we came from;

·         what was sacrificed to get us here; and

·         where we are still trying to go.

Remember the Power of One

Reach deep within yourself and remember that freedom was once won, but the current establishment is steadily chipping away at it. We cannot afford to sit back and assume our voices do not matter.

Do not sit back and think, “My one vote does not count.” One is a powerful number. The Bible reminds us that it took one rock to bring down Goliath—so get out, swing your rock, and trust that it can land where it needs to.

Stay Informed and Stay Engaged

As a young man who started without a college degree, I fought hard to reach success. I did it by remembering what my parents told me: no one is going to hand it to you. So, I voted, stayed informed by reading about upcoming global trends, and kept an ear out for what was happening politically, both locally and nationally.

Today, there are young African Americans with degrees, drive, and a willingness to work, yet many still cannot find opportunity because of current policies.

To me, it feels like reverse DEI—(IED)—blowing up opportunities for our people and for others who are educated, qualified, and ready to contribute.

The Question Before Us

What are you going to do about it?

Note: By using the term IED, I do not condone violence or encourage it in any way.

POET'S CORNER

Submit Your Poem

Here's a poem I wrote a few years ago for my nieces and nephews to read for my mother's 85th birthday.

(THAT’S MY GRANDMA)

SHE FALLS ASLEEP WATCHING TV

(THAT’S MY GRANDMA)

BUT SHE NEVER FALLS ASLEEP LOVING ME

SHE ALWAYS DISCIPLINE ME WHEN I AM BAD

(THAT’S MY GRANDMA)

AND SHE STILL DISCIPLINE MY MOM AND DAD

SHE HAS CANDY, CHIPS, SODA, ALL THE GOODIES I LIKE

(THAT’S MY GRANDMA)

IT’S NOT FOR ME BECAUSE SHE LOVES TO SNACK

SHE GIVES ME ALL OF HER LOVE AND SHARES HER PATIENCE

(THAT’S MY GRANDMA)

GRANDMA ANNIE IS THE MATRIARCH OF MANY GENERATIONS

WE LOVE HER

(THAT’S MY GRANDMA)
